The Music Industry is smaller then you think; and Reputation is Key!

The Music Industry is smaller then you think:

In my 6 years of working in the industry I have sure learned how small and tight-nit the music industry can be. On a local and even global level. I have seen bands rise and fall and have seen what helps bring them success and what can end a career overnight.

One of the most important things is your reputation. In a band this goes for all of your members, the relationships you have together with your manager, your label and any promoters etc you meet a long the way. Keep in mind you never know who is listening or watching, a reputation good or bad can be passed on over night to tons of industry reps. You could potentially tarnish a relationship that you may not get back. I have over-heard several conversations myself with people not knowing that I am connected to certain individuals and I can tell you it unfortunatly makes a very long lasting impression on a person or group.

Some of the biggest bands I have worked with (Nickelback, Hinder, My Darkest Days) are also the most generous, kind and thoughtful individuals I have been able to have the privilege of knowing. Makes you wonder if their attitude is what has helped bring them such success to date? – you BET! ┬áTreat every fan, every promoter, every sound technician, every radio interviewer, every opening act, every person on your team with the outmost respect. I know the challenges that can arise and it can be very difficult, frustrating, time consuming and draining trying to make it in this industry. But at the end of the day you do it because you love it more than anything. If you keep a positive attitude towards your members and the people you work with in your day to day and meet along the way I know it will assist in bringing you great success.

Remember, you never know who could be in the room at any time…
